How much thought do you put into what is in the food you eat?
Most of us, not much.

The Cleveland Clinic examined fast food hamburgers, a major go-to meal with Americans consuming roughly 5 billion a year. As researchers examined hamburgers from eight different fast food restaurants with electron microscopy in their research labs, they found some interesting things in the “meat.” The microscopy showed a variety of tissue types besides skeletal muscle in the burgers, including connective tissue, blood vessels, peripheral nerves, adipose tissue (fat), cartilage, and bone, in addition to ammonia used to kill fecal bacteria. In two of the hamburgers, intracellular parasites (Sarcocystis) were identified. The researchers concluded that fast food hamburgers are comprised of little meat, with a range of 2% to 14.8%.

Another thing to seriously consider is added hormones in meats. In the US, we inject steroids and anabolic hormones into livestock. Do we really need these toxic chemicals in our food supply? How will these added hormones affect our growing children? Concern has been raised about how this affects the incidence of hormone dependent (breast, ovarian, prostate, etc.) cancers.

What you put into your body is an important thing to consider. An excellent rule of thumb is to eat locally grown food in as close to their natural state as possible including a wide range of colors. Wondering how to improve your nutrition? Speak with a staff member about what changes you can make.

We now offer massage therapy services! Please help us welcome JaNan to our office! She will be in the office during normal office hours to help you. Speak with a staff member soon as her spots will fill up!

FDA Permits Feeding Chicken Arsenic Adding More Toxins into Our Food Supply
Volume 14 - Issue 47

Ask any mom who is about to feed her toddler some chicken strips, if she would like that chicken to have been fed arsenic. It’s very, very likely that the answer would be no, she would not. In fact, you’d probably be hard-pressed to find a mom who would be willing to feed her children arsenic-contaminated chicken.

But moms and dads have unwittingly been doing exactly that for many years. It turns out that the Food and Drug Administration permits the feeding of arsenicals, arsenic-containing ingredients, to chicken to improve the rate of weight gain and prevent intestinal infestation by parasites. A study by the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) recently found that out of 8.7 billion broiler chickens produced in the United States each year, 70 percent of those on starter rations (for young chickens) and 74 percent of those on grower rations are being fed arsenicals such as roxarsone.

Arsenic is a known carcinogen (cancer-causing substance) that also bioaccumulates – which means when you are exposed to this element, it can build up in your body. It is also known to be a hormone disruptor, something that is very good to keep away from young, growing bodies. So when arsenic is included in chicken food, does it wind up in our food? Well, of course. Some is eliminated in their manure (more on this later) but some lodges in the meat and organs of the chickens.

The IATP tested many of the best known brands of uncooked chicken available in stores and several types of cooked chicken products available from fast food stores. Fifty-five percent of the chicken samples contained detectable amounts of arsenic. While you can get the entire report at http://www.healthobservatory.org/library.cfmrefid=80529, here are a couple of highlights.

All fast food products tested contained arsenic, but Jack in the Box’s sandwiches measured five times the arsenic of a chicken sandwich from Subway. Purdue/Roundy’s chicken pieces averaged 20 parts per billion (ppb) of arsenic while Tyson’s products measured between 0 and 4 ppb. Three-quarters of conventionally grown chicken tested positive for arsenic, and even one in three organic products showed signs of arsenic. So on average, organic chicken products are a safer bet for your family.

Naturally enough, arsenic shows up in chicken litter as well. So what happens to this litter? Some of it is scooped up and fed to cows. While the FDA considered banning this practice in 2004, as of yet, it is still the norm in the industry.

To find the healthiest chicken for your family, check the report from the IATP and encourage your meat provider to carry chicken products that have not been fed arsenicals!

The condition of ‘heartburn’
gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD) occurs when some of the acidic contents of the stomach flow backward (reflux) into the esophagus causing a painful burning sensation in the chest. Normally, when we swallow, food goes down the esophagus into the stomach through a hole at the top. This hole closes and keeps food and acidic digestive juices within the stomach.

Under some circumstances, GERD can lead to the upper portion of the stomach actually pushing up through a hole (hiatus) in the diaphragm causing a ‘hiatal hernia.’ This can result in pain in the stomach area, chest pain and, the more commonly known, heartburn sensation. An adjustment directly to the diaphragm and stomach can be very helpful. The nerves controlling the stomach and diaphragm come from the neck and mid-back and may need attention as well.

Along with the adjustment, dietary changes and possible nutritional supplements may be necessary for these symptoms to stop completely. You might not think about going to your chiropractor to get relief from abdominal discomfort, but think again! The stomach is a major organ along the digestive pathway, and a big player in many digestive symptoms such as GERD and hiatal hernia.

Receiving one adjustment can help several areas of the body at the same time! Yeah for time management! Do you or a friend have heartburn (GERD) and/or a hiatal hernia? Speak with a staff member today! Our purpose is to help as many people as possible in their quest for health. Our purpose starts with you!

Would you be interested in learning how to hold your adjustments better, relieve pain throughout the body, and help your body relax? Come to our home care class on Tuesday, September 10th at 6:30pm here at the office. We will provide dinner so you don't have to stress out about what to eat. Let us know how many family members, friends, and co-workers you are bringing so you all can learn to work on each other. Space will be limited, so the sooner we know the better!

NEWS: We are adding massage therapy to our line of services! Starting in September, you can get even more stress and worries pushed out of your life at our office. Watch our facebook page and health reports for upcoming information. Schedule soon as these spots will fill!

MEDICAL DOCTORS DISCOVER THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CHIROPRACTIC
Volume 2 - Issue 91

Following is a number of testimonials from medical doctors who have discovered the value of chiropractic.

“Chiropractic is founded on the science of cause elimination and is the only method of specifically adjusting the cause of so-called disease that has ever been proved by fact. It {chiropractic} is greater than either osteopathy or medicine and will eventually lead the field. Chiropractic stands firmly on its marvelous achievements...and needs no greater tributes.” - Edward S. Doutt, M.D.

“Under spinal adjustments, acute diseases are cut short and aborted, and chronic diseases recover which have been believed incurable.” - A.A. Gregory, M.D.

“The sooner the medical profession recognizes the work of the chiropractor, the better. He is doing the work medicine cannot do; he belongs exclusively to the class of specialists...” - M.E. King, M.D.

“I believe chiropractic to be the most scientific method of removing the real cause of disease, thereby allowing nature to resume normal action...” - U.A. Lyle, M.D.

“I do not practice medicine anymore. Chiropractic is a lot better. I can reach more cases and go more directly to the cause of disease by chiropractic than I could by medicine, and do it more scientifically and better.” - G.W. Raby, M.D.

“Chiropractors are obtaining results that I could not have obtained with medicine and surgery.” F.C. Rutherford, M.D.

“Chiropractic is not a ‘cure all’ and it should never be claimed as such, but it reaches successfully a larger number of chronic diseases than any other known mechanical method, and is so much superior to the drug method that it is truly laughable to compare them.” - Alfred Walton, M.D.

“I started out, as do most beginners in the medical art, to conquer the demon dis-ease with drugs. I too, often failed as they all do...the more I studied and experimented, the more I was convinced that the real cause of disease was impinged nerves, and that the chiropractic adjustment was the most scientific way to release them...results are what count and chiropractic care, when scientifically given, brings them...” - William A. Seeley, M.D.

“I have used chiropractic in my practice and have secured results which, as a medical man, I believed were impossible. The results I got are due to the fact that I use specific chiropractic care exclusively.” - Lee W. Edwards, M.D.

“The contrast of osteopathy to chiropractic is as great as the contrast of an old-fashioned blunder-bus to a modern high powered rifle...this opinion is based on knowledge gained through my experience in drugless therapy, and is so firmly fixed in my mind that I no longer practice osteopathy at all.” - Dr. S.C. Wyatt, former Osteopath.

Health Report, August 12th, 2013.

There used to be an advertisement that said:
"It's not nice to fool Mother Nature."

This should be a "mantra" recited by everyone before considering using antacids. Stomach acids are necessary for digestion by breaking down the food we eat and allowing absorption by the body.

Our stomachs have to secrete lots of hydrochloric acid every time we eat to break this food down into a soupy mix which is passed on to the small intestine, where the nutrients are absorbed into the body. Without proper amounts of acid in the stomach, food will not digest correctly. How acidic is the stomach acid supposed to be? Acid is measured using the pH scale.

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14 with 0 being the most acidic and 14 being the most alkaline. 7 is neutral. The level of acid in the stomach is usually in the 1 to 3 range. This very acidic level is similar in strength to battery acid! However, your stomach is made to handle this much acid! Contrary to popular belief, your problem may not be too much acid but too little acid! If you are not producing the correct amounts of acid you will not be able to absorb all the nutrients that you need.

You might also have an issue with acid reflux. The closure at the top of the stomach needs the proper level of acidity to close tightly when you are digesting food. If you or someone you know are unsure why you are having digestive issues and are wanting to get to the root cause, we might be able to help you.

Dr. Moss has had great success with getting help to patients suffering from digestive issues. Just let us know. Our purpose is to help each person we can to achieve the highest level of health possible.

Your Choice: Upset Stomach or Bone Fractures?
Volume 14 - Issue 67

When patients go to their doctors with persistent upset stomach, their doctors may warn them that chronic stomach upset can contribute to erosive eophagitis (EE). EE is a condition of irritation and ulceration that can occur when stomach acid chronically leaks into the esophagus from the stomach. EE can eventually lead to cancer in some people.

One of the most common solutions offered by the medical profession is prescription strength Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid, Aciphex, Vimovo and related drugs that are available over-the-counter. These drugs block the ability of the stomach to produce and release digestive acids into the stomach. So yes, the person may now no longer suffer from heartburn, but their ideal digestion is also interrupted rather than being repaired and restored to normal and healthy activity.

Now there is even another reason why these drugs should be avoided.

The FDA has just notified doctors that those drugs which reduce stomach acids cause an increased risk of fractures of the hip, wrist and spine. Those at greatest risk are those aged 50 or older who’ve used high doses of such drugs for a year or more.

While the greatest increased risk for fractures in these studies involved people who had been taking prescription proton pump inhibitors for at least one year, as well as those who had been taking high doses of the prescription medications (not available over-the-counter) — as a precaution, the “Drug Facts” label on the OTC proton pump inhibitors (indicated for 14 days of continuous use) is also being revised to include information about this risk.

The FDA is recommending to healthcare professionals, that when prescribing proton pump inhibitors, they should consider whether a lower dose or shorter duration of therapy would adequately treat the patient’s condition.
