Relief from this heat, finally! We have heard from our patients that they are so happy the heat has backed off a bit, especially from our moms to be. Some important tips for all you pregnant women to keep in mind during these hot times: keep feet raised when sitting down to avoid swollen ankles; sit in the coolest room in the house or try to sit where there is a breeze; work in small time frames and rest in between; if feeling faint, sit down and get plenty of rest; move around slowly and avoid rushing about. The most important thing to do is to stay hydrated. Contractions can begin if you are dehydrated, have been overdoing it, or are over heated. If this happens, drink a tall glass of water and lay down to watch a movie or two. If contractions continue, make sure to contact your care provider.

Do you know someone with Fibromyalgia? Leigh Ann will be speaking to a Fibromyalgia support group. Fibromyalgia; what it is and natural ways to help relieve it! It will be taking place at Broadlawns hospital on Thursday July 28 at 6:30pm. Seating is limited and refreshments will be served so please RSVP. If you would like more information and to reserve your spot today call us here at the office at 964-9114 or by e-mail at events@drmoss.net. JOHNSON & JOHNSON IN LITIGATION BLIZZARD OVER BIRTHCONTROL PATCH INJURIES AND DEATHS

Johnson & Johnson is experiencing a blizzard of more than 500 lawsuits over its Ortho Evra® birth control patch, which has been linked to heart attacks, strokes, blood clots and pulmonary embolisms in users.
According to reports in the media, more than 500 claimants are seeking “substantial compensatory and, where available, punitive damages,” from Johnson & Johnson for injuries and deaths related to the product. And lawsuits over the patch are only expected to increase. Based on the millions of prescriptions written for the Ortho Evra patch since it came on the market in 2002, critics say there are thousands of victims who do not yet realize that an injury or death was caused by the patch.
Most lawsuits name as defendants patch maker Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, a New Jersey based subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Like nearly all of the cases filed so far, these lawsuits claim that the drug company failed to adequately investigate the safety of the patch and deceived consumers about the potential dangerous side effects, including the risks of strokes and blood clots.
Patch delivers too much estrogen
The FDA approved the Ortho Evra patch in November 2001, and it quickly became one of J&J’s most popular products. Once attached to the body, the patch delivers the hormones estrogen and progestin directly into the bloodstream through the skin.
Most experts agree that the dangers of the patch stem from its delivery system. By releasing estrogen directly into the bloodstream, a woman can end up with an estrogen level of up to 60% higher than a woman taking the pill. This is partly due to the fact that the absorption rate of a pill traveling through the digestive system is much lower than the patch, which delivers estrogen 24 hours a day.
Mainly to suppress negative publicity about the Ortho patch that would have an adverse effect on sales, Johnson & Johnson attorneys have been trying to settle the Ortho Evra lawsuits almost as quickly as they are filed by offering substantial settlements that require the plaintiffs to sign a confidentiality agreement in order to keep the damaging information out of the public eye.
In addition, legal experts say J&J attorneys are fully aware that the cause of the injuries and deaths alleged in the lawsuits will be easy to prove because the plaintiffs have a “signature disease,” described as a condition closely linked to the use of a drug that is otherwise very rare. In this instance, they point out, blood clots, heart attacks and strokes are extremely unusual in teenagers and women of childbearing years, with the only commonality among the victims being the Ortho Evra birth control patch.

I heard that we might have a record this week on days straight of 90 degree weather. Wow! Not a record I would like to beat. It is essential for your body to be well hydrated with water when it is hot outside and especially when the heat index gets above 100. If you don't stay properly hydrated it can led to heat exhaustion and eventually heat stroke. Signs of heat exhaustion include profuse sweating, overall weakness, vomiting, headache, lightheaded feeling, and muscle cramps. These are ways your body tells you it is getting too hot and you need to cool down immediately. It's important to get the benefits of the vitamin D from the sun but make sure to have several periods of heading in doors or into the pool to cool off. Make sure to keep an eye on children as well. They may not recognize these warning signs as adults can. So, ditch the pop and juice and switch to water! Your body will thank you!

Do you know about Fibromyalgia? It effects 2-4% of the population and over half of those affected are women over 30. If you or someone you know is faced with this disease we have a seminar for you. Leigh Ann is speaking at Broadlawn's Hospital on Thursday, July 28th at 6:30 pm. She will discuss what Fibromyalgia is and what we can do to help relieve the symptoms for you or someone you love. Seating is limited so please contact us at events@drmoss.net, or here at the office to save your seat today!

ACUPRESSURE BRINGS NATURAL DELIVERY WHILE DOCTORS PLAN A C-SECTION

A first-time mother, who was having a very difficult time in the hours leading up to the delivery of her child, was greatly helped with acupressure administered by an attending nurse. As a result, a child who very likely would have come into the world via a Caesarean Section arrived through a natural birth.
The 32-year-old expectant mother was having a very difficult labor and had already been placed on PitocinTM (a drug that increases contractions), but was not making any progress. There was also concern that the baby’s head was not in position to fit through the pelvis. A C-section was being considered as the baby’s head should have descended by this point in the delivery process.
It was at this stage that nurse Pamela Wallach began to administer acupressure to the mother. Ms. Wallach, a nurse with 21 years of experience, who had also studied Chinese medicine at the Midwest Center for the Study of Oriental Medicine in Chicago.
The nurse performed acupressure on the mother’s back while enlisting the help of the husband to apply pressure to a point on her feet. Acupressure helped the mother with her labor by regulating and increasing the circulation of blood and qi (energy), plus inducing downward movement of the baby’s head.
Within just 20 minutes the contractions became more efficient and stronger in intensity. The Pitocin flow was reduced as the woman’s own contractions began to engage. Her mental outlook also greatly improved as she began to feel the baby’s head moving downward and into birthing position.
After one hour, the mother was completely dilated and ready to push.
Within one more hour of pushing, the mother delivered spontaneously. All involved were elated and very pleased. By looking at the situation and the body in a different way and moving the blood and energy, a natural birth occurred and a C-section was avoided.

IS LOW BACK PAIN AND PELVIC PAIN DURING PREGNANCY
PHYSICAL OR “BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL”?

During pregnancy, the weight of the growing baby and the changing structure of a woman’s body can unfortunately change a wonderful experience into a time of constant low back and pelvic pain. One study in Sweden found that 72 percent of pregnant women studied experienced low back pain.
Another study in the Netherlands reported that because the causes and treatments of this pain were unknown, the pain might be thought to be “biopsychosocial.” In other words, not just medical, but a combination of “biological, psychological, and social factors.” In even other words, some part of your low back or pelvic pain may be in your head!
But some patients are finding relief from this “biopsychosocial” ailment in their chiropractor’s offices. After receiving Chiropractic treatment for low back pain late in her pregnancy, one patient stated, “The pain is gone! The result of Chiropractic is faster than I thought, which is really good, because I have to take care of my two-and-a-half-year-old and get ready for my new baby.” Another patient who received Chiropractic care in her second pregnancy reported,
“The pregnancy and birth of my second child was basically problem-free. I never got the so-called ‘usual’ aches and pains, and swollen ankles which I had experienced with my first child.
Chiropractic care is now a NECESSITY for me and my kids.”
Another Chiropractic patient reported that she was miserable during her pregnancy until she got Chiropractic care. “My back hurt, I was unable to breathe when I laid down, and I was tired. After receiving gentle Chiropractic adjustments on a regular basis, I started to notice a difference in how I was feeling. It was amazing. My backaches were going away, I could lie down without gasping for air. With my regular adjustments, I had more energy and wasn’t as tired. The problems seemed to be less and less the more I got adjusted. I was no longer miserable with my pregnancy, I was happy!”
With these results, these patients are sure that Chiropractic care is the correct answer for low back and pelvic pain during pregnancy. Find out how Chiropractic can help you!
