Do you know what your child is eating at school

You probably think the school is providing him with a wholesome and nutritious meal. In reality, he/she may be eating just about the worst quality meat possible. A typical American elementary school menu can include deep-fried popcorn chicken, tiny taters, bread, barbecue sauce, ketchup, milk, etc. Everyone from nutritionists, public-health experts, the First Lady, and a growing number of extremely frustrated parents, believes that our children's school lunches are still over-processed affairs laden with unhealthy preservatives, sodium, sugar, and trans fat.

Nutritional quality varies widely from district to district, but according to the USDA a typical school lunch far exceeds the recommended 500 milligrams of sodium, with some districts as high as 1,000 milligrams. The USDA also reports that less than a third of schools stay below the recommended standard for fat content in their meals. A recent study released by the American College of Cardiology found that students who ate lunch provided by the National School Lunch Program were more likely to be obese compared to students who brought lunch from home.

In addition, kids who ate school-provided lunches were more likely to eat fatty meals, drink sugary beverages, and eat fewer fruits and vegetables than their counterparts. So, is it time to review what your child eats at meals at school? If the quality of your child's nutrition is a question for you, let us know. Dr. Moss strives to help each patient ingest the best quality food possible and supplement whatever nutrients are lacking. A healthy body starts with a healthy nutrition plan. Let a staff member know of your concern as soon as possible so we can schedule a nutrition exam for your child, and maybe even you!

New Research Links Childhood ADHD Symptoms Directly to Poor Diet
Vol 15 - Issue 59

A recent European study of 100 children diagnosed with ADHD has found a strong link to diet, with as many as 63 percent of them negatively affected simply by eating processed foods. When ADHD kids were placed on a restricted elimination diet – removing all foods linked to allergies and in tolerances, such as wheat, eggs, dairy, and highly processed foods – 78 percent of them showed a significant reduction in symptoms, including decreases in challenging and defiant behavior.

The children, ages 4 to 8 years old, were randomly divided into two groups: kids on a restricted elimination diet, and a control group of kids on a “healthy diet,” which included processed foods. Of those on the diet without processed foods,78 percent got better. When highly processed foods were reintroduced as part of the research, ADHD symptoms among 63 percent of the kids immediately spiked. The five-week study, “Impact of Nutrition on Children with ADHD”, was conducted in the Netherlands and Belgium by the Radboud University Medical School and the ADHD Research Center in the Netherlands.

Professor Jan Buitelaar of Radboud University said the study's findings showed that food additives were not a direct cause of the shift in ADHD behaviors – although there are other experts that would question that conclusion–but that the children were “overly sensitive to certain food stuffs”, whether a basic food,or an ingredient.

Food sensitivities areactually a form of allergy. They are usually diagnosed with a food allergy test known as IgG ELISA/EIA, which tests for immunoglobulin type G (IgG) antibodies. These antibodies are created by the body to attack invading allergens or pathogens and they contribute to a variety of health problems. However, the accuracy of this test is in question since symptoms can occur hours or even days after consuming the food – long after the IgG spike has passed. Also, in the case of a gluten or dairy sensitivity, for example, if the offending food is only one ingredient of many, it can be difficult to determine which ingredient is actually causing the problem.

The bottom line in the battle against the symptoms known as ADHD is that you need to identify the substance or ingredient that is causing the sensitivity using a carefully supervised elimination diet. And do not rely on IgG blood tests. The findings in this study agree with earlier research that has shown that children whose diets contain foods that are high in preservatives, additives, and food colorings are at greater risk of suffering from a whole range of conditions, including those symptoms known as ADHD.

Participation in sports or exercise is an important step in maintaining your health.

Exercise strengthens your heart, bones, joints, and reduces stress, among many other benefits. Unfortunately, injuries during participation in sports are all too common. Often, these injuries occur in someone who is just taking up sports as a form of activity, doesn’t use proper safety equipment, or becomes overzealous about the exercise regimen. Although bones can sometimes be fractured with acute sports injuries, the most commonly injured structures are the muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Recent research has shown us that adjustments can be helpful with pain reduction and more rapid recovery. Have you had a recent injury? Do you have an older injury that is still causing problems? Tell Dr. Moss! His advanced techniques could help you recover more quickly. Our purpose is to help as many people as possible in their quest for natural health. We can't help if we don't know what you - and your friends and family - need help with!

Just getting started with a new exercise routine? Do you feel stiff and sore after your workout? Are injures holding you back? Join us for our doctor supervised workout class! Saturday May 31st from 10am-12pm at Fitness World Ankeny 116 SE Lorenz Dr. This is the gym just behind our office. CHIROPRACTIC HELPS PITCHER TO STARDOM
Volume 12 - Issue 133

Just one year ago, baseball pitcher Cole Hamels was on his team’s disabled list and sat out the entire month of September with injuries. Now, this same pitcher is the celebrated winner of the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in the World Series while leading his team to a World Championship.

Hamels is a pitcher with the Philadelphia Phillies. Toward the end of the 2007 season, he developed elbow problems that were severe enough to keep him on the sidelines. Earlier in his career he'd also suffered from knee and hip concerns and had been helped through these problems with Chiropractic care.

Prior to the start of the 2008 season, Hamels went to the Phillies front office with a request. He wanted the organization to provide the services of a chiropractor to himself and his team while they were at home in Philadelphia. And, he took his request one step further. He wanted the Phillies to provide for his Chiropractic care while the team was on the road and playing in many different cities around the country. When the team agreed, Hamels had this to say. “Ever since I’ve used one (a chiropractor) it’s done wonders for me. It’s great that they (team management) is going out of their way to get a network going.”
It was April 2008 when he made this comment.

At the time he also said that with Chiropractic services fully available, that he felt he could, one day, reach the magic number of becoming a 20 game winner for a season. Hamels didn’t quite reach the 20 game regular season number this year. He finished the year with an impressive 14-10 record. However, this helped his team to a conference championship and a position in the playoffs, and it was in this portion of the season that a healthy Hamels really began to shine.

His first play-off appearances came against the Milwaukee Brewers. He was the winning pitcher as his team advanced to the next round against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hamels pitched the first game of this series and again came out the winner and the Phillies advanced to the World Series. Hamels also came away with the individual honor of being named the MVP for the League Championship Series.

With this success behind him and his health and confidence booming, Hamels was on the mound for the first game of the World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays and won the game. Finally, with the series on the line, Hamels got the call again for the deciding game and was the winning pitcher for that one as well. His performance netted him the coveted MVP award for the 2008 World Series!

Hamels post-season performance and his personal 4 victory and 0 loss record in the play-offs will long be remembered. Unlike the fall of 2007 where he was forced to watch play-off games on television while nursing a sore pitching arm, he was now the toast of the town while making personal television appearances on the likes of the Late Night Show with David Letterman.

It is quite apparent that Hamels’ confidence in Chiropractic and his ability to get involved in taking care of his own health had everything to do with his successful season. Congratulations to Cole Hamels, the Philadephia Phillies and Chiropractic for a World Championship season.

We hear the question in the office:
"What is the difference between vaccination and immunization? Aren't they the same thing?" The terms immunization and vaccination are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference between the two.

Webster's dictionary defines vaccination as "the introduction into humans or domestic animals of microorganisms that have previously been treated to make them harmless for the purpose of inducing the development of immunity". Immunization is defined as "the fact or process of becoming immune, as against a disease". Whether you're stomping through the showers in your bare feet after gym class or touching the bathroom doorknob, you're being exposed to bacteria. Fortunately for most of us, the immune system is constantly on call to do battle with bugs that could put us out of commission. The immune system, which is made up of special cells, proteins, tissues, and organs, defends people against bacteria and other microorganisms every day. In most cases, the immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections.

Some people never seem to get sick while others seem to be sick all the time. Adults and teens tend to get fewer colds than kids — their bodies have learned to recognize and immediately attack many of the viruses. We can also help boost the immune system by getting regular adjustments, especially before and after an immune system assault such as vaccinations. There have been numerous studies showing the many benefits of regular adjustments. The nervous system and immune system are hardwired and work together to create optimal responses for the body to adapt and heal appropriately. We want to help as many people as possible to live a happy, healthy life. Let us help your body, and that of a friend, be the healthiest that it can be because that is a part of our purpose!

Have you had a chance to join us for our Ganoderma class? No....? Well, if that is the case we happen to have a few openings for our next two classes in May! GET A JUMP ON COLD, FLU SEASONS WITH IMMUNE SYSTEM ENHANCING ADJUSTMENTS
Volume 11 - Issue 136

One of the many benefits of Chiropractic care is that it can provide excellent benefits
toward fighting against and warding off the flu. Spinal adjustments provided by chiropractors have an excellent track record in increasing the immune function of the body and helping it to stay healthy – especially during cold and flu season.

The reason for this success is because Chiropractic works to increase the function of the
immune system. It does so by correcting spinal abnormalities known as subluxations (minor
dislocations of the vertebra). These subluxations are known to cause interference with the
proper function of the nervous system by placing undue pressure on the nerves themselves.

As the nervous system controls all bodily functions, including those of the immune system,
Chiropractic adjustments go a long way toward contributing to overall health and wellness.
The interaction between the nervous and immune systems has been shown to be positively affected by Chiropractic adjustment. “Through research, we know that Chiropractic
has beneficial effects on immunoglobulins (a naturally occurring antibody), B-lymphocytes(these are the white blood cells), pulmonary (of the lungs) function and other immune system processes,” said Dr. Matthew McCoy, who serves as the editor of the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research.

One such study tested the response of white blood cells as important infection fighters. When Chiropractic manipulation was applied to the middle of the back, it was found that white blood cells were present in significantly higher number than prior to the adjustment. What this study demonstrated was that the adjustment provided an “enhanced respiratory burst” that helped immune cells to destroy invading viruses and bacteria. In so doing, they provided greater resistance toward the invasion of the flu virus.

Another large study examined the overall improvement of people who had experienced Chiropractic care. A wide variety of benefits ensued, showing between 7 and 28 percent improvements to people suffering from spinal discomfort, fatigue, incidence of colds and flu, headaches, allergies and physical pains. Specifically of interest to cold and flu sufferers is that a 15% reduction in colds and flu was achieved by this group of 2,818 individuals who received regular Chiropractic care.

In addition to providing needed adjustments, chiropractors are concerned with the total well-being of the individual and educate their patients toward positive health and lifestyle practices. Getting ample rest, drinking adequate water, exercising regularly, choosing a proper diet and correctly using multivitamins and minerals are essential to staying resistant to colds and flu.
